There is a dark side to one of the most beautiful festivals in the world. In Mexico, millions celebrate their deceased on the the Day of the Dead but unknowingly expose their loved ones to the deadly mosquito viruses Dengue, Zika and Chikungunya infecting over 12,000 and killing over 5,000 in Oaxaca alone. Ironically, the flowers used to honor the dead are left behind leaving standing water in vases over the graves, a perfect home for mosquito larvae. Other than costly mass spraying there is no way to control it. We thought what if we decided to use the flowers causing the problem and find a solution. Bouquets for the dead made of mosquito repelling flowers were made and distributed through florists to share with families honoring their graves. It turns out that Off, the brand known for repelling mosquitos also found an organic way to protect the living while honoring the dead.
